Melissa has over 16 years’ experience working with the private sector, policy makers and regulators to respond to a variety of sustainability challenges and build more sustainable enterprises and markets. The majority of Melissa’s clients operate in the finance, infrastructure, extractives and industrial sectors in emerging market economies. A key focus area is advising financial sector actors on environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks at an investment level but also regulators on emerging systemic risks to financial markets. She is currently supporting a number of commercial banks and private equity funds internationally with the design and implementation of their environmental and social risk management systems.
Since 2007 Melissa has been the core tutor for UNEP FI’s environmental and social risk analysis e-learning programme for investment officers in addition to facilitating numerous seminars globally with the finance sector. She has also supported the banking sector in Nigeria with the development and implementation their Sustainable Banking Principles, building awareness with Bank Executive and Non-executive Directors and the CEOs and Board members of the finance sector regulators.
Melissa holds a MA from Oxford University in Pure & Applied Biology and an MBA.
Paulina has participated actively in the finance and sustainability sector by providing consultancy service in the areas of Microfinance and Management of Protected Areas in Latin America. As a specialist consultant, she provided practical tools to monitor financial costs with a sustainability perspective in Banco Estado Chile and Southern Environmental Association in Belize.
Paulina currently leads the Business Management and Strategic Leadership and Management programs at Oxford Business College in the UK. Her participation from the academic perspective has allowed her to influence international young students and professionals to adopt a more proactive approach to Sustainable Finance. Paulina has been in charge of designing, implementing and evaluating academic modules such as Managing Sustainability in the Corporate World, Professional Development for managers under Sustainability Principles and Corporate Governance.
As Vice Chair of Finance and Administration at Grupo Calesa in Panama, Paulina designed, resourced and implemented the Department of Social and Environmental Monitoring and achieved the First National Certification of Good Practices in Environment Management for Grupo Calesa.
Jörg has an extensive experience in managing environmental and social issues of investment projects in numerous developing countries including 15 countries in Africa. Based on his technical and commercial education in Aachen, Germany and Paris, France he has worked as Head of the Environment Group of the United Nations Asian and Pacific Center for Transfer of Technology in New Delhi, India.
Jörg was employed by DEG as an environmental and social expert. During this time, he got an in-depth inside view of the financing sector thereby better understanding the necessary balance between economic, ecological and social considerations. Among others he was in charge of environmental and social due diligence for banks and Private Equity Funds and many projects in sectors with high E&S risk potential.
After leaving DEG, he founded Innovativkonzept Ltd and has assisted many financial institutions and private equity funds in setting up a proper environmental and social risk management systems. Further, he has been in charge of E&S due diligence for several large scale infrastructure investment projects based on the IFC Performance Standards. Also, he has acted as IFC’s E&S advisor on numerous large scale investment projects.
Jörg is currently assisting the Sri Lankan Banks Association with their Sustainable Finance Initiative.
Sandy is currently the Regional Sustainable Finance Expert at WWF Kenya, where he is responsible for providing competent and strategic support to the East Africa Sustainable Investments Programme and co-leading Sustainable Finance work stream in the region. The Programme is geared towards influencing financial and investment flows associated with major developments in the Eastern Africa Region (Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique) through financial market, policy and regulation and trade and investment interventions.
Previously, he was a Senior Finance Analyst within a Corporate Finance team at Deloitte East Africa where he worked extensively on transaction advisory work streams including M&A due diligence investigations, financial and market analysis & research, business valuations and financial modelling. His coverage included manufacturing, services (real estate, education, and logistics), financial services, energy (geothermal, oil & gas) and telecommunications. His coverage was Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.
He has also worked as a Consultant within the Global Urban Observatory (GUO) at UN-HAHBITAT, and as an Investment Analyst Intern, at Guardian Managers (UK) Limited, a London Canary Wharf based Hedge Fund, where he supported the portfolio managers, and the Investment and Risk Committees. Through his experience, he has worked extensively with local and international organizations, including Governments and state owned corporations, listed companies, private sector clients, NGOs and DFIs.
He holds an MSc in Finance, Investment and Risk from the University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom, and a BSc Actuarial Science. He has also undertaken the Sustainable Finance Programme from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Olumide Lala is a Climate Finance Specialist with over 25 years of change management and capital markets development experience. His career is focused on driving the development of green bond markets, sustainable finance and finding solutions to challenges of climate change across Africa.
He comes with a wealth of knowledge in product development, risk management, business process re-engineering, and stakeholder management.
Olumide holds a B.Sc degree in Accounting from the University of Hull, England, an M.Sc in Business Systems Analysis and Design from the City University, London, England, and an MBA from the Imperial College, London, England. Olumide is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (FIoB) and a Member of the Institute of Directors (MIoD).
Farwell Innovations Ltd is an experienced provider of eLearning services. We have provided eLearning platforms, designed industry programs and delivered results with impact in the Finance sector as well as Trade and Development sectors in Kenya, Sri Lanka and Germany.
The team comprises technical and graphic design, project management and software developers to ensure an end to end service offering.
Reuben Wambui is the Africa Regional Lead at UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) where he leads the Sub-Saharan Africa regional program working closely with banks and insurers on sustainability issues. He is an economist with extensive knowledge of sustainable finance in Africa. Prior to UNEP FI, he worked at McKinsey and Crédit Suisse and has experience working in multiple countries in Africa and Europe. He has written widely on climate risk and made several media appearances on CNBC Africa.
Reuben obtained a Master’s in International Economics from the Graduate Institute in Geneva where he was a Credit Suisse scholar and won the Rudi Dornbusch Prize for best thesis in Economics. He is also co-founder of the Net-Zero Africa Initiative that runs a database of climate funding opportunities in Africa.
He has previously trained all Kenyan bank CEOs on the CBK Climate Risk Guidance at a session organized by the CBK at KSMS. He was also a trainer for the KBA Workshop on the Guidance in Naivasha training over 80 senior bankers. He has also trained the CBK Bank Supervision Department on climate-risk disclosures from the regulatory side. Since the issuance of the CBK Guidance on climate risk, he has worked with 10+ Kenyan banks training and supporting them on the topic, including training boards and management teams.
Nuru Mugambi, FKIB
Sustainable Finance and Responsible Investment Policy Expert
Nuru has been a subject matter expert on Sustainable Finance and Responsible Investment in Africa for over 10 years. She has spearheaded strategic initiatives aimed at reinforcing the financial sector’s role of being a core driver of sustainable economic development on the Continent. Her contributions towards policy formulation have led several industries, including in Kenya, Ghana and Tanzania, through their trade associations towards adopting numerous progressive practices, particularly in Sustainable Finance and Responsible Investment.
As a consultant, she has developed capacity building programs for financial sector professionals in Liberia, Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. And her Sustainable Finance capacity building model has been replicated by other countries, including Mongolia and Sri Lanka.
The Sustainable Finance Initiative that she designed for the Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) leads in Africa in terms of building industry capacity; more than 30,000 bank employees have been trained through the program. Also on behalf of KBA, she designed and convened the Kenya Green Bond Program, which established a green bond market in the country and helped facilitate the first certified green bond in East and Central Africa that was issued by Acorn Holdings.
Nuru currently serves as a technical advisor to the IFC Sustainable Banking and Finance Network, and on the advisory board of Ecocapsule, the producer of the world’s first off-grid capable, wind and solar-powered tiny homes.
She is pursuing graduate studies at the Andrew Young School of Public Policy in Atlanta; her area of interest is Sustainable Finance, Responsible Investment and Financial Inclusion. She has an executive master’s degree with a focus on social entrepreneurship from Georgia State University and graduated with honours in business administration from Kennesaw State University.
Emma is a consultant specialized in SMEs, indigenous peoples, impact investment and corporate CSR strategy development and implementation. In sustainability planning and execution, her expertise is delivering financial, social, environmental and brand value by devising programmes aligned with the client’s business. Experienced working with private, public, development and community partners.
Emma has worked for UNDP, De Beers, the Calvert Foundation, Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the Kenya Bankers’ Association (KBA) as the local consultant liaison for the SFI programme. She is currently managing an impact fund that invests in pro-poor businesses located in East Africa and India. She has previously worked as the Americas Livelihoods Coordinator for Fauna & Flora International a global environmental NGO, and Director of ERM the global environmental consultancy’s inaugural investment impact fund and applied CSR vehicle, providing capital and pro bono ERM advisory to support low carbon SMEs. After closing their first fund and raising the second, Emma relocated to Nairobi 6 years ago where she set up Impact Capital Advisors, a boutique consulting firm that has provided support to various organizations in the sphere of sustainable investment and sustainable finance including
Emma is the founder of Tiny Totos Kenya, a social enterprise building a franchise of upgraded slum-based daycares run by women in lower income neighbourhoods of Nairobi.
Emma has a first class Bachelors from Oxford University in History, a Masters in Resource Management from the University of British Columbia, Canada and an MBA with Distinction from Oxford’s Said Business School where she was a Skoll Scholar in Social Entrepreneurship.
Eugene is a Senior Manager at Camco, having joined the company in 2015. He is currently managing Camco’s work on the Renewable Energy Performance (REPP) mandate in the Eastern Africa region and manages the Nairobi office.
Eugene has over 15 years’ working experience and extensive project management experience. He has worked for Chase Bank, Siemens(Germany), Allianz Asset Managers(Germany) and Shell Africa working in several finance, analytical and managerial roles. More recently he has been working in the renewable energy sector in Kenya, firstly as East African Lead for Finance and Competence AB, where he advised several renewable energy project developers on financial strategy, negotiations with potential equity and debt providers and local legal and regulatory requirements.
Subsequently at Camco, Eugene has been responsible for identifying renewable energy projects (including mini-grid projects) that would be eligible for support through the Green Africa Power(GAP) and REPP mandates, participating in appraisal of potential projects, liaising with project developers to negotiate termsheets and Support Agreements and optimising financial structuring of supported projects.
Eugene has an MBA from Warwick Business School in the UK (specialising in Global Energy) and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Nairobi, School of Business.
Renewable Energy Finance & Risk Management – Eugene Obiero is an expert in renewable energy project and corporate finance. He works on financing projects, all the way from early stages to financial close. Eugene is involved in analysing different categories of risks from financial, technical, operational, offtaker, social & environmental risks. Then using his expertise to mitigate these risks and structuring the best financial solutions that enable projects and businesses to be financed and implemented.
Jelle Pentinga’s strength comes from his diversified background combining ESG and banking. Jelle lived and worked for 10 years in central and eastern Africa implementing healthcare projects geared towards the socially disadvantaged. In this capacity he gained valuable hands-on experience on the challenges with social and community projects. Since 2012, Jelle is working as consultant for DEG, the German Investment and Development Bank, in Nairobi. As member of DEG’s Technical Assistance team he helps the bank’s clients structuring their projects related to ESG. In this capacity he has also been actively involved in the development of the KBA SFI principles and e-learning platform.
Jelle is a permanent Kenyan resident, has a MSc in Technical Business Administration, is a CFA level II candidate, passed the UNEP E&S training for investment managers and completed the KBA-IFC SFI training for Kenyan consultants.
Maushe has over 10 years’ professional experience working on sustainability assignments, focusing on environment, social and governance. Maushe’s expertise ranges from capacity building on IFC Performance standards (PS), aligning ESIA studies against IFC PS, conducting environmental and social due diligence, establishment and monitoring of E&S Management Systems(ESMS) and sustainability reporting. Maushe has a M.Sc. (NRM) from UK, a B.Sc. (Forestry) from Kenya and certificates in Tropical Agroforestry (Scotland) and Project Cycle Management (Netherlands). For the last 10 years Maushe has conducted assignments in Sub-Saharan Africa for both Direct Investments (infrastructure, agribusiness manufacturing clean energy and property and Financial Institutions (Banks and Private Equity).
Maushe has worked for a number of organizations including; UN (UNOPS, FAO) World Bank (IBRD and IFC), INGO (IIRR, FARM Africa, WWF, ADRA) and bilateral (DFID, USAID, Sida). Currently, Maushe is a Short Term Consultant for IFC and Norfund.

Nelly is a seasoned practitioner in Environmental Risk Management, Natural Resource Management, Climate Change and Sustainable Finance. She was instrumental in rolling out the ground-breaking Carbon Reduction, Resources and Opportunities Toolkit (CaRROT) for the flower sector in East Africa. To date, this tool continues to enable flower farmers to efficiently manage their carbon emissions, water and energy resources. The CaRROT was commissioned and developed in collaboration with the Horticultural Crops Development Authority (HCDA) and the Kenya Flower Council (KFC). Nelly has also been actively involved formulation of several Policies and Strategies in East Africa including; The East Africa Community Climate Change Master Plan, The Lake Victoria Basin Climate Change Strategy and most recently Kenya’s National Wildlife Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. Nelly has experience in capacity building for stakeholders in public and private sectors in the Green Growth thematic area having carried out extensive capacity building in Rwanda, Malawi, Nigeria and Djibouti. Angela Mwenda (PhD) has 17 years’ experience in environmental management, education and training, and project management.
Angela’s areas of expertise include: Environmental and Social Impact Assessments; Environmental audits; Resettlement Action Plans; Socio-economic surveys; Gender mainstreaming; climate change adaptation and mitigation; Green growth and development; Green technology; Capacity building and training; Environmental and social inputs for infrastructure projects; and Theoretical and practical experience in public consultation and participation.
She holds a PhD in Environmental Management (Public Participation) from Wageningen University/ Maastricht School of Management – Netherlands (June 2015), an MSc. In Environmental Studies (Science) from Kenyatta University, Kenya (1999 – 2003) and a B.Ed. (Geography, Biology) from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton (UEAB), Kenya (1992 – 1996).

Peter Muriu holds a PhD in Financial Economics from University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He is a senior lecturer in monetary and financial economics at the Department of Economics & DevelopmentStudies, University of Nairobi. Kenneth Amaeshi is a Professor of Sustainable Finance and Governance at the School of Transnational Governance. He is currently on leave from the University of Edinburgh, where he is the Chair in Business and Sustainable Developmentand Director Scaling Business in Africa. He is also a Visiting Professor of Leadership and Financial Markets in Africa at the London School of Economics and an Honorary Professor of Business in Africa at the Graduate School of Business,University of Cape Town, South Africa. Kenneth is a leading scholar on sustainable business and finance in the global south.
His research interest currently focuses on financial market reforms and governance, as well as on sector-level policies for sustainability and sustainability strategy in organisations. He has an expert level knowledge of developing and emerging economies.His research has a very strong interface between business and society, particularly national governments in Africa, where he has an extensive network. Since 2015, he has significantly contributed to developing the intellectual foundations of Africapitalism – an economic philosophy for the development of Africa – and championed its mainstreaming in the global academia. Besides teaching and researching, Kenneth works closely with businesses and governments in Africa, Europe, and Asia.
He leads executive capacity building engagements and consultancy projects in the broad areas of sustainable finance, sustainability strategy, leadership, ethics, and governance for multinational corporations and institutions. Between 2016 and 2017, he was a Scholar in Residence at the National Pension Commission, Nigeria.
Kaori Yasuda is the Regional Strategic Partnerships and Programme Development Coordinator/ Country Representative for Kenya at IUCN Eastern & Southern Africa Regional Office based in Nairobi, Kenya. Kaori has more than 20 years of experience in international development, programme development, and strategic partnerships in the areas of environmental and biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, climate change and natural resource governance and management in Africa, Europe and North America.
Her previous experience includes working for the Centre for Socio Economic Development (CESD), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTD) in Geneva, Switzerland and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) USA in Washington DC.
Jackson is WWF Kenya ‘s Head of Conservation overseeing Conservation programmes. He leads the development and implementation of conservation programmes for WWF - Kenya and is also a WWF global Finance leadership team member. Jackson is the immediate Regional Manager for Sustainable Investments and Infrastructure programme and has 20 years’ conservation experience. He has overseen the Governance programme for WWF Kenya and also held an interim role of Policy lead for WWF Regional Office for Africa.
In these roles he has overseen the participation of environmental CSO in the historic recognition of environmental rights in the Kenya Constitution 2010 through establishment of CSO platforms for engagement and building partnerships and trust with key policy making institutions/governments towards WWF engagement in National Regional and global policy processes like environmental legislation, green economy, climate change strategies and globally the SDG and UNFCCC negotiations.
Before Joining WWF, Jackson was a lecturer of Environmental Studies and Head of Training at the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya Training and Research Centre in Nairobi which was a twin partnership with Moi University. Jackson also worked with the forest sector civil society organisation – Forest Action Network.
Jackson holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies (Science) from Kenyatta University in Kenya.
Dorcas has a Ph.D in Environmental Ethics Education and Masters in Environmental Education. She has also attained certificate training in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Corporate Governance, Green Economy Project Development, Business Plan Development and Institutional & NGO Management, amongst others.
Dorcas is the UNESCO Chair holder of Kenyatta University Higher Education Development for a Green Economy and Sustainability (HEDGES), an interdisciplinary Chair, housed in the School of Environmental Studies where she is a Senior Lecturer. She is a member of both the Global and the Kenya UNESCO Chairs Networks. Founder and Executive Director, Kenya Organization for Environmental Education- a Global FEE Chapter in Kenya.
She has served as the Vice Chair & Chairperson to the Board of National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Dan Likuyi Ndenga is a Professional Engineer registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK).
He has an Msc in Chemical and Process Engineering from Moi University and B.Tech, Chemical and Process Engineering from Moi University. He is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) and a Project Management Professional (PMP). Eng. Ndenga has trained on Climate Change under the Young Africa Leadership Initiative Program run by the American Embassy. Prior to Cofounding Miltec Engineering, Eng. Ndenga worked at Chloride Exide Kenya as a Product Development Engineer.
